Most people spend more time choosing a paint colour for their hallway than they do thinking about the colours they wear on their face every single day. And yet the colours closest to your face, your clothes, your glasses, your accessories, have a quiet but powerful effect on how you look, how you feel, and how you are seen by the world. That's not me being dramatic. That's colour doing its thing.
I got into colour analysis properly a few years ago and it genuinely changed how I see everything, including myself. I'd spent a long time being invisible, wearing colours that blended in, not really knowing or caring what worked and what didn't. Then I started learning about colour theory and I realised I'd been slightly dimming myself down without even knowing it. Now colour is at the heart of everything I do at MODS Eyewear Studio, and it is one of the most exciting conversations I have with my clients.
So What Actually Is Seasonal Colour Analysis?
Seasonal colour analysis is a way of identifying which colours work best with your natural colouring, your skin tone, your hair, your eyes. It's rooted in colour theory and was developed to help people understand which shades bring out the best in them and which ones, without any judgement, just sort of drain them.
The system divides into four seasonal groups: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each season has its own family of colours, and those families relate to the undertones and depth of your natural colouring. Springs tend to suit warm, clear, fresh tones. Summers suit soft, cool, muted shades. Autumns are happiest in rich, warm, earthy colours. Winters come alive in strong, clear, cool or contrasting tones.
But here's what I want you to take away from this: it is not a rigid box. It is a starting point, a conversation, a discovery. At MODS I never just hand someone a laminated colour card and send them on their way. We sit down, I use drapes, we chat, and we work out what genuinely lights you up, because personality is part of this too. A palette that's technically correct but that feels nothing like you is not a palette worth having.
How Do I Know Which Colours Actually Suit Me?
The most honest answer is that you probably already have a sense, even if it's buried. Most people have been told at some point that a certain colour looks brilliant on them, or they've put something on and felt immediately more confident without being able to explain why. That feeling is colour doing exactly what it should do.
When colour works with your natural colouring, a few things happen. Your skin looks clearer. Any shadows or redness around your face seem to reduce. Your eyes look brighter. You look more alert, more alive, more present. When the wrong colour is close to your face it can do the opposite, and it can be very subtle, but it's there.
The way I find your colours at MODS is through draped fabric samples held close to your face in good natural light. We look at what happens to your skin in each drape. We talk about what you see, how you feel, what you're drawn to. It's not a test. There are no wrong answers. It's genuinely one of the most enjoyable and personal appointments I offer because it tells you so much about yourself, not just which colours to buy.
Can Colours Actually Affect Your Mood?
Yes. And not in a wishy-washy way either. Colour psychology is a well-researched area and the short version is this: the colours around us and on us genuinely influence how we feel and how we behave. Warm, rich colours tend to energise. Softer, cooler tones can calm. Bright, bold colours draw attention and signal confidence.
I see this play out at MODS all the time. Someone comes in wearing a lot of grey and beige, which is fine, completely fine, but when I put a rich teal or a warm coral drape near their face and they catch themselves in the mirror, something shifts. They sit up a little. They smile. Sometimes they laugh. Colour gives you permission to be seen and that can be a genuinely emotional moment for people who've spent years making themselves smaller.
I know that feeling personally. For a long time I wore things that helped me disappear. Then I read a book on holiday (Get Rich Lucky Bitch, no shame, brilliant read) and came home ready to wear the big earrings, embrace the colour, and actually be seen. If I can help someone else get there a little faster than I did, then I'm very happy.
Colour and Your Eyewear: It's Not an Afterthought
Your glasses are on your face every single day. They sit right there, closer to your eyes than almost anything else you wear. And yet so many people choose their frames without any consideration of colour at all, either picking something neutral so it goes with everything or just going with whatever the sales assistant points them towards.
As a dispensing optician as well as an eyewear stylist, I bring your prescription into the studio and we build the complete picture together: the frame, the colour, the lens, the fit, all of it. I also know that the technical side, the pupillary distances, the lens specifications, the measurements that need to be spot on for you to actually see properly, all of that is taken care of too. You're not choosing glasses in isolation. You're choosing with someone who understands the whole thing.
When your frame colour works with your seasonal palette it does something quietly brilliant. Your glasses stop being something you're just tolerating and start being something that genuinely works for you. They become part of your style rather than a functional addition to your face. And when they're the right colour, the right shape, the right fit, worn with intention, people notice you. Not your glasses. You. Which is exactly the point.
Building Your Colour Confidence
Colour analysis isn't just about what to wear. It's a tool you can carry into every part of how you present yourself. Once you know your palette you can use it when you get dressed in the morning, when you choose accessories, when you pick your next pair of glasses, when you build your professional wardrobe. It's not about following rules. It's about understanding your own personal style well enough to make choices that feel like you, on purpose.
Some of my clients come in genuinely nervous about colour. They've been in beige and navy for so long they've convinced themselves that's just who they are. And sometimes it is! Some palettes genuinely are soft and subtle and that's absolutely fabulous. But sometimes we discover that they are actually an Autumn who should be wearing burnt orange and olive and they've been dimming themselves down for years without realising. That discovery is brilliant to be part of.
Colour analysis at MODS is very much personality-led. I'm not interested in handing you a generic seasonal palette and calling it done. I want to know about you, your style, what you love, what you'd never dare wear but secretly want to try. The conversation is part of the service. A cup of tea is also part of the service. It's warm, it's relaxed, there's no pressure and no sales agenda. Just real, personal advice in a space that feels nothing like a high street optician.
If you've been wearing the same safe colours for years and you're ready to find out what your palette actually looks like, or if you're curious about how colour could change the way you feel in your glasses and in your wardrobe, come in for a chat.
