You wear them every single day. They sit right in the centre of your face. They are literally the first thing people see when they look at you. And yet, somehow, so many people end up with a pair of grey, beige, or safe-as-houses frames that say absolutely nothing about who they are. I see it all the time and it baffles me.
Not because people don't care about how they look. They absolutely do. But because somewhere between the eye test and walking out of the door, the actual joy of choosing eyewear gets lost. You get pointed at a wall of frames, given roughly four minutes of attention, and off you go. It doesn't have to be like that.
The Problem With "Just Picking Something"
Most high-street opticians are brilliant at testing your eyes. That side of things, the clinical bit, they've got covered. But what happens after the test? That's where the experience tends to fall apart. You're handed off to someone on the shop floor, often with little or no real styling training, who needs to hit a sales target by the end of the month. The advice you get is shaped by what's in stock, what's on promotion, and what gets the transaction done quickly.
I know this because I spent a long time working in that world. The industry I came from was bonus-led, target-driven, and genuinely impersonal in a way that used to make me uncomfortable. Nobody was asking what you loved. Nobody was thinking about your colouring, your personality, or the life you actually live. It was volume. In, out, next please.
And so people settle. They pick the frame that feels safe. The one that won't cause a fuss. The one that nobody will comment on. Which, ironically, is also the one that nobody will notice.
Style Is Not the Same Thing as Trend
There's a difference between chasing what's on the runway right now and finding what actually works for you. One is about keeping up. The other is about knowing yourself. Style is personal. It's the thing that makes someone walk into a room and just look right, even if you can't immediately put your finger on why.
Eyewear is one of the most powerful style tools you own, because it never comes off. Your bag gets put down. Your shoes get swapped. Your coat gets hung up at the door. But your glasses? They're there all day, every day, right there on your face. That's an opportunity. A big one. And most people aren't using it.
What makes a frame exciting isn't about following a particular look or buying into whatever's considered current. It's about a frame that reflects something real about you. A bit of colour that lights up your skin tone. A shape that has a bit of personality. A detail, a texture, a pattern, something that makes you feel like you when you put them on. That feeling of putting on the right pair and going, yes, that's it. That's what I'm here for.
Finding Frames That Actually Feel Like You
The frames I bring into the studio are sourced from independent designers and makers around the world. You won't find most of them on a high street. Some are small-run. Some are genuinely one-off pieces. All of them have been chosen because they have something about them, a bit of quirk, a bit of character, a lot of colour. They're the kind of frames that make people stop and say, where did you get those?
When someone comes in for a styling session with me, the conversation doesn't start with "what shape are you looking for?" It starts with you. What do you love? What do you wear? What do you want people to think when they see you? What have you always been drawn to but never felt brave enough to try? We talk, we explore, and then I pull frames I think will work. Often things you'd never have reached for yourself. And more often than not, those are the ones that make you gasp a little when you look in the mirror.
That's the bit I love most. That moment. It happens every single time and it never gets old.
What About Bringing Your Prescription?
Just so you know: I don't do sight tests at the studio. You'll need to get your prescription from your optometrist (and please do, regular eye checks matter), but once you have it, you bring it to me and I take care of everything from there. As a qualified dispensing optician, the technical side, the pupillary distances, the lens measurements, the glazing, I handle all of that properly and accurately. You don't have to worry about a thing. The lenses go into the frames you actually want, fitted correctly so you can see beautifully and look fabulous at the same time. WIN WIN.
Can You Mix and Match Eyewear With Your Outfits?
Short answer: absolutely yes. And I'd go further. Building a small eyewear wardrobe is one of the best things you can do if you love getting dressed and want your whole look to feel intentional. Different frames for different moods, occasions, and outfits. A bolder pair for when you want to be seen. Something a little softer for quieter days. A frame with a colour pop that ties back into something you wear regularly.
Colour analysis plays a huge part in this. Understanding your colours, the tones and depths that genuinely work with your colouring, changes everything. Not just for your glasses but for how you dress, how you accessorise, even how you do your makeup. It's not a rigid formula. It's a conversation, a discovery. And it's one of the things I find most exciting to explore with people because the results are always so personal.
When you know your colours, you stop second-guessing. You stop reaching for safe. You start picking things because they genuinely work, and that's when the confidence starts to build.
On Being Seen
I spent a long time being invisible. Keeping small. Not wanting to be noticed. It took me years, and honestly some proper life-changing moments, to get to the other side of that. Now I wear the big earrings. I wear the colour. I walk into a room and I'm happy to be there. And glasses, the right glasses, were part of that shift for me.
That's not me being dramatic. Eyewear is face art. It's the thing that frames your whole expression, literally. Choosing it with intention, choosing something that feels like you rather than something that just corrects your vision, is an act of self-acceptance. It's saying, I am here, I have a personality, and I'm not hiding it anymore.
A lot of the people who come to me are in that headspace. They're 40-something, 50-something, done with playing it safe, ready to explore a bit. They want something different but they don't always know where to start. That's exactly what the studio is for. It's warm, it's relaxed, there's always a good brew on, and there is absolutely zero pressure. Just proper, personal, expert advice and a lot of fabulous frames to play with.
If you're ready to stop settling and start actually enjoying the process of choosing eyewear, come and have a chat. You can call me on 07863 544088 or book your 60-minute styling session. I'm excited to find your perfect new look. Don't just see. Be seen.
